No Second Chance pro driver Warren Luff has reinforced his position in the 2013 Australian Carrera Cup Championship by increasing his margin over third place to 44 points.
Although struggling with tyre grip over the weekend Luffy managed two thirds and a second to put him on the podium for the third consecutive Carrera Cup round.
A tough run in qualifying put the No Second Chance Porsche in 6th place on the grid for race one. But after a brilliant start Luffy moved up to 3rd in the first few corners where he stayed for the rest of the race.
Race two was another 3rd staying out of trouble and collecting some valuable championship points.
Luffy got another great start in race three and quickly made his way into second place. As well as chasing down Baird in first, Luff had to contend with some aggressive driving from behind which ultimately saw Nick Percat retire from the race early with a damaged radiator after contacting the rear of the N2C Cupcar.
Combined points put Luff on the podium to take second outright in the Pro Class and maintain second in the championship.
We spoke N2C Team Principal Andy McElrea to ask his thoughts about that elusive first place and what the team’s strategy is going into the next round at Winton.
“Well let’s put it into perspective,” said McElrea. “Craig Baird is officially acknowledged by Porsche Motorsport as the most successful Carrera Cup racer in the world.
“Being second to Bairdo is like being runner-up for the World Championship so I couldn’t be happier given that this is Luffy’s first season in the Carrera Cup and we are only at round four.
“To be competitive so quickly is what we were expecting and we would like to take a few wins off Bairdo by the end of this season”.
“Having the experience that Baird has allows him to dial in his car for the conditions quickly reminding us that on race days there is ‘No Second Chance’.
“As far as our plans for the Championship, Luffy is under strict instructions to drive as fast as he can without hitting anything. We will leave the point counting to the officials.”
The next round is in a month at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria, a racetrack very well suited to the Porsche Carrera Cup Car so we look forward to a very exciting and competitive event.
